SOCRATES
MAN OF
ATHENS—MAN OF GREECE
MAN OF THE WORLD!
Socrates,
(470-399 BC) was perhaps the most original, influential, and
controversial figures in the history of Greek thought. Philosophy
before him was “pre-Socratic”; he was the “hinge” or the orientation
point, for most subsequent thinkers and the direct inspiration of
Plato. Why Socrates as my mentor?? Daniel Boorstin in his book
THE SEEKERS said, “Socrates brought the search for meaning down
from heaven to earth.” I, Jack Simpson, would have been a fool not
to take advantage of that.
Suitcase
What is the
history of SUITCASE? SUITCASE was originally a character in
a comic entitled T OONERVILLE TROLLEY. SUITCASE had a
reputation with big feet; they called on him in the spring to tramp
out forest fires. Harry “Suitcase” Simpson was a black baseball
player on the PITTSBURGH PIRATES’ roster when Jack was playing
baseball for PARKS COLLEGE of St. Louis University; his hometown was
Pittsburgh. He was the white man’s Suitcase. To this day, 65 years
later, many people do not know his first name---except his
creditors! They call him Mr.
Simpson!
Appleknocker
Where did
APPLEKNOCKER come from? APPLEKNOCKER, according to
Webster’s Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary, means “rustic”.
“Rustic” means a characteristic of, or resembling country people:
one lacking in social graces or polish! That’s me!! That’s me!!
